How not to feel gloomy in the season of gloom..?

Ok, a serious question. We spend a month (at least!) looking forward to Christmas. A season of festivities, feasting and an abundance of glitter and fairy lights is worth spending a month looking forward to! It’s probably true to say that so many of us are then spending a month missing the magic. But my question is why? Why do we mourn Christmas when there are too many other things that we can look forward to and swoon at the very promise of?

Aside from St Valentine’s day and Pancake day what else do we have to look forward to do I hear being asked? The promise of Spring and all the beauty that has to offer of course! The garden, the Park, other peoples’ gardens, anywhere nature can do what nature does best is abundantly full of gifts and treasures that are waiting to be devoured and enjoyed, it’s the very same as the parcels wrapped in Christmas paper under the Christmas tree waiting to be unwrapped by their grateful recipient.

If you feel glum at this otherwise uninspiring time of year, here is my suggestion. All of the trees and ‘twigs’ that look dead and just, well, brown. Take the time to consider the leaf buds that are just waiting to present themselves like baubles on a Christmas tree. The blossom on the trees that even on a gloomy day could be likened to all of the twinkly fairy lights that adorn the bare branches of trees during the festive season. Underground, the tulips and the daffodils are preparing on making a grand entrance to brighten the flower beds with their colour explosions. We should be getting ready as there is so much to look forward to.

lets start planning what we can grow in our gardens to make them beautiful. Where can we go to see Spring springing? It wont be long before the buckets of daffodils are in buckets in the supermarkets. Those unassuming green stalks that hide their true golden beauty for when the time is right! We can fill our homes with the decorations of Spring! We love a cinnamon scented candle at Christmas but in Spring, let’s let nature fill our homes with it’s own decadent fragrances!

Once we have mastered that, we’ll be looking forward to the promise of Summertime.

Bring it on!
